Punisment for stamping Persie face and tauting the Arsenal Fans

Emmanuel Adebayor will be charged by the FA today with violent conduct for his stamp on Robin van Persie and will miss the Manchester derby. The striker will be banned for three matches, with the FA viewing the incident as a red card offence.

And, if the FA chooses to punish a second stamping incident involving Cesc Fabregas, Adebayor's ban could increase to four games.

But that is not the end of the player's punishment, with word coming from Manchester City that the disciplinary book will be thrown at Adebayor and an internal fine totalling £200,000 dished out.

Response from Adebayor the 25million pounds Manchester City player

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor believes he doesn`t deserve a punishment from the English Football Association (FA).

The forward from Togo stamped on Robin van Persie`s face in Saturday`s match against Arsenal (4-2 win for City) and taunted the fans of his former club after scoring the third goal.

On Sunday FA chief executive Ian Watmore already told that the player`s actions would come under scrutiny.

Today, Adebayor told the press he doesn`t know why he should be punished. `Neither the police or the FA have told me that they want to talk to me. The same goes for the club.`

`I heard a steward got wounded after Arsenal fans threw firework,` the City striker said.

`I regret that. I also apologized to Robin. It was foolish from me to celebrate my goal in front of the Arsenal fans but they cursed at me. It wasn`t planned at all, it came to my head at the last moment. That`s all.`

Response from Van Persie

Arsenal forward Van Persie said Adebayor didn`t apologized to him. `I didn`t heard apologies from him. In fact, I`ve heard nothing at all from him.`

On Saturday the Dutch international already stated that he was furious at his former teammate.

I am sad and disappointed by Emmanuel Adebayor’s mindless and malicious stamp on me during the match,” said the Dutchman.

`We are both professional footballers and I know that the game is physical. I, too, have made hard and sometimes mis-timed challenges but never with the intention of hurting an opponent. He set out to hurt me today.`

`I feel lucky that I have not suffered a greater injury. The contact was only centimetres from my eye. I have not received an apology from him, there were no words exchanged afterwards. He had his own agenda today and that is bad for football.`

Adebayor, who scored City's third goal, looked lucky to stay on the field in the 70th minute when his apparent assault went unseen by referee Mark Clattenburg. Replays suggested that Adebayor knew what he was doing when his right foot made contact with a prone Van Persie, though he denied it after the game. If Clattenburg confirms he did not see the incident, the FA could ban Adebayor on video evidence.

There was clearly contact close to the Dutchman's eye and he needed treatment for a facial wound. Van Persie said: "I knew he was aiming for a collision because he changed the angle of his body to allow contact to be made.

"He moved backwards when his natural momentum would have taken him forward. I find that deeply disrespectful. He has shown a real lack of class today, to me and the fans."

Arsenal supporters were further infuriated when, 10 minutes after the stamping incident, Adebayor taunted them after scoring to put City 3-1 ahead. He ran 100 yards to celebrate in front of the visitors, and later apologised for his behaviour. "To be honest I'm very sorry for all this," he said, admitting "sometimes the emotion takes over". There were minor scuffles involving fans and stewards.

Adebayor said his collision with Van Persie was unintentional but the Arsenal man was unconvinced. "I do feel lucky that I have not suffered a greater injury," he said. "The contact was only centimetres from my eye. I have not received an apology from him, there were no words exchanged afterwards. He had his own agenda today and that is bad for football. It's bad for the game we all love. I want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with the result of today's match. We do not hide from that disappointment but I need to speak out about his behaviour."
