The tournament got underway amid a carnival atmosphere after a spectacular opening ceremony, and the football did not disappoint. Bafana Bafana took the lead through a stunning 20-yard drive by Siphiwe Tshabalala to send their fans into raptures and set a spectacular standard for the rest of the competition to live up to.


But Barcelona veteran Marquez popped up at the far post to smash the ball past keeper Itumeleng Khuneand ensure honours were even after the first match in Group A.
